How to Read THC Labels on Edibles Without Getting Confused
Not all cannabis is created equal - and reading the label is key to getting the experience you want.
Understanding THC Labels on Edibles
Whether you're new to edibles or just want a better grasp on what you're consuming, reading THC labels correctly is essential. Edible cannabis products are dosed differently than flower or concentrates, and knowing what those numbers mean can help you avoid unpleasant surprises and enjoy a more consistent experience.
Total THC vs. THC Per Serving
One of the most important things to look for on an edible label is whether the THC amount listed refers to the whole package or just one serving. Many products contain 10 servings - often at 10 mg THC each - totaling 100 mg per package. But not all products follow this pattern, especially medical edibles. Always check both the total THC and the per serving dose to know exactly what you're getting.
Comparing Edibles to Flower
Unlike flower, which lists THC as a percentage (e.g., 20% THC in 1 gram = 200 mg THC), edibles are measured in milligrams. That means 10 mg of THC in an edible is a precise dose - much more controlled than smoking or vaping, where effects vary depending on how much you inhale and how your body absorbs it.
What About Concentrates?
Concentrates like wax, shatter, or vape oil often contain 70–90% THC, making them far more potent than flower or edibles. However, their labels are also in percentage format, and dosing is less precise unless you're using a pre-measured device. Edibles, by contrast, are designed for controlled, measured effects.
Watch for CBD, Minor Cannabinoids, and Warnings
Many edible labels also list CBD content and other cannabinoids like CBN or CBG. These can influence how the THC feels - CBD may mellow the high, while CBN can add a sedative effect. Also check for allergen info, storage instructions, and state-mandated warnings about delayed onset and keeping out of reach of children.
How to Use This Info
If you're new to edibles, start with 2.5 to 5 mg THC and wait at least 2 hours before considering more. Read the label closely to understand the full dose, per serving strength, and cannabinoid mix. When in doubt, ask your budtender for help - they’re there to guide you to the right product for your needs.
